Sri Lanka make clean sweep in men’s 200m event

A jubilant Sri Lanka men’s athletics team snatched all three medals in the 200M T42 event medals yesterday, in a rare moment, that saw three Sri Lankan flags raised simultaneously at the third Para Asian Games held in the Indonesian capital city Jakarta on Monday.

Onus on government to save Lanka cricket

Alex Marshal, the head of Anti-Corruption unit of the ICC issued a press statement detailing investigations underway into corruption in cricket that has stunned this cricket loving country. The statement included the announcement of a meeting the ICC delegation has had with the President, Prime Minister and the Minister of Sports, and investigations that are on-going.

England cricketers arrive for long tour

The England cricket team arrived in Sri Lanka yesterday for a seven-week tour where they will play a series of five ODIs, a one-off T20I and a series of three Tests. Sri Lanka cricket's lowest point was round the corner

There’s anger and rage at Sri Lanka’s embarrassing first-round exit in the Asia Cup and the team’s horrendous performance was discussed at the Parliament on Thursday with Sports Minister Faiszer Mustapha coming in for intense criticism. He promised to fix the mess but how he does it remains to be seen. The mood is the same everywhere in the country. This is Sri Lankan cricket’s lowest point.

The five-time former Asia Cup champions’ collapse wasn’t sudden. Their decline has been steady. Last year Sri Lanka suffered a first-ever Test defeat to Bangladesh, lost an ODI series to Zimbabwe for the first time and were whitewashed 5-0 by South Africa, India and Pakistan.


This year, they failed to make it to the finals of the tri-nation Nidahas Trophy conducted to celebrate the country’s 70th year of independence. Just prior to the Asia Cup, they lost a five-match home series to South Africa with two ODIs to spare.

Who is the best “Lankaputhra” cricket coach Chandika or Jerome?

When the Minister of Sports Faiszer Mustapha was being grilled in parliament by members of the opposition over the country’s cricketing woes last week, he was seen waxing eloquent on why the country should give every possible chance to a Lankaputhra coach to succeed. He was also seen bandying around statistics to show that Chandika Hathurusingha had a much higher win ratio than the preceding foreign coaches. This is after the ‘Daily News’ had shown that all previous successes that the Sri Lanka team achieved were under foreign coaches who focussed on coaching without getting themselves embroiled in team selections.
