Victory for the people - Ranil

UNP leader Ranil Wickremesinghe said yesterday that the Supreme Court Interim Order on the Dissolution of Parliament was a victory for the people. Wickremesinghe said they salute the Judiciary and the political parties and civic organisations that came forward to defend the Constitution and democracy. Later in a Twitter message, he said : “The people have won their first victory. Let us go forward and re-establish the sovereignty of the people in our beloved country”.

SC decision eagerly awaited

A cross section of political leaders and lawyers interviewed by the Daily News said they were eagerly awaiting the Supreme Court’s verdict on the dissolution of Parliament. Representatives of all parties said they would abide by the Court’s decision. Most expressed the opinion that people have now been given an opportunity to elect a Government of their choice on January 5. Excerpts from the interviews:

ELECTIONS OFFICE IN TURMOI

All three Members of the Independent Election Commission of Sri Lanka (IECSL) were of the view that President Maithripala Sirisena’s proclamation, dissolving the Parliament, was unconstitutional and illegal, IECSL Member, Professor Ratnajeevan H. Hoole said yesterday (12), through a Fundamental Rights (FR) Petition, filed in the Supreme Court, seeking the abolishment of the President’s decision to sack the Parliament and call a snap election on 5 January 2019.
