President Maithripala Sirisena said he has congratulated United Sates President elect Donald Trump and requested his country’s continued support towards Sri Lanka’s development and progress in the future
President Sirisena said he will take steps to bail out the country from the UNHRC accountability with the assistance of the new US president by forwarding the UNHRC proposals to him and holding discussions with him through several representatives.
He said he was confident that Sri Lanka will finally emerge victorious in this matter altogether. The President made this observation speaking at a SLFP membership programme at the Galle Town Hall on Saturday.
President Sirisena said both Northern and Southern extremism should be totally rejected and the country should be rebuilt to enable people of all communities to lead a happy and contended life.
He said as a party, the SLFP had to teach a lesson about the manner in which sincere efforts should be made to develop the country by eliminating fraud, corruption and other malpractices without pocketing public funds.
He said there had been financial misappropriation of Rs. 4,012 million allocated to the Nilwala Ganga development scheme during the previous regime.
The project had never got off the ground despite such a large allocation of money, the President said.
President Sirisena said the confidence placed in this government by the people has remained firm and stable to date despite various criticisms and allegations levelled against it by certain disgruntled elements.
He said the government on its part will perform its responsibility of taking the country forward to fulfill people’s hopes and aspirations in keeping with that confidence.
The President said the SLFP will contest future elections under its historic hand symbol harnessing the support of all left parties and progressive forces.
He said he would definitely steer the party to victory at the next local government elections due in the middle of next year.
