Around 1,500 vehicles had been deployed for the personal use of former President Mahinda Rajapaksa and the inventory of vehicles too has gone missing sources said.
Some vehicles have been dismantled and left behind in various parts of the country while there is no information pertaining to the rest of the vehicles.
President Maithripala Sirisena instructed the IGP to investigate and find out what had happened to the vehicles used by the former President.
Meanwhile, 13 luxury cars rented for the use of the Higher Education Ministry during the past several years, were returned on the instructions of the newly appointed State Minister Prof. Rajiva Wijesinha.
According to the minister, under the new vision for a corruption free government, they were starting by example.
“If we reduce this unnecessary expenditure, we can solve some of the problems related to poverty,” he said.
