Former President Mahinda Rajapaksa has signed the nominations to contest the general election from the Kurunegala District. Former Parliamentarian Wimal Weerawansa made this reference at a news conference. It was held at the Abhayarama temple yesterday.
Mr. Weerawansa said the election will be a decisive one as it becomes a historic day of the Maithri Mahinda combination. Many were of the belief that such an agreement was not possible. But achieving this goal he said they consider as a major victory. Accordingly, Mr. Weerawansa said that they expect to hold the Anuradhapura rally after the 13th and officially launch the election campaign.
Expressing views in this respect, Deputy Minister Ajith P. Perera said that the former President has become helpless that he is not in a position to contest from the District that he is residing. He pointed out that the former President should contest not from Kurunegala but from the Colombo District in which there is a strong competition and the opposing Prime Ministerial candidate is contesting.
The Deputy Minister said that he should have come to Colombo from Hamabantota and not to Kurunegala. He added that if the former President was so strong, he should have come to Colombo and contested with Ranil Wickremasinghe.
