Amending SLSFTA GL queries Samarasinghe’s claim

The claim made by Minister of Ports and Shipping, Mahinda Samarasinghe, that the Sri Lanka-Singapore Free Trade Agreement (SLSFTA) could be amended after a year is a fabrication, Chairperson of the Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna, Professor G.L. Peiris said yesterday (17).

Prof. Peiris told a press conference held by Joint Opposition Party Leaders at the Sri Lanka Foundation Institute, that Minister Samarasinghe’s claim that the Singapore-Sri Lanka FTA could be amended after a year was a total fabrication and was not the case.

“This is an Agreement that jeopardizes our people’s livelihoods. Now, they’re saying this isn’t the last agreement, and that there’s some sort of flexibility to change this the way we want. This is an absolute lie. This is why I believe that the time has come for the people to protest,” he said.

Meanwhile, the Leader of the National Freedom Front, Parliamentarian Wimal Weerawansa added that according to the SLSFTA there was no restriction anything destructive, to the economy, being brought into the country. He added that even nuclear waste could be brought in and there would be no qualms about it.
