Chairman of the Ekabaddha Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna Prof. G. L. Peiris, responding to a question on the Speaker’s stand that he could not decide on giving the Opposition leader’s post to the JO on the basis that half the ... UPFA was in the Government and the other half was in the Opposition, said indignantly that Speaker Jayasuriya’s logic of argument was inconsistent, illegal and had no logical validity.
“It is ridiculous on the part of Speaker Karu Jayasuriya to say that a fraction of the JO is in the Opposition and the other fraction is in the Government when the Opposition faction is not paying heed to the Government Whip.”
While explaining that all the members who are both in Government and in the Opposition have been elected to Parliament on the ‘betel leaf’ ticket, Prof. Peiris said that the all the UPFA members should abide by the whip of the Secretary of the UPFA.
“If all the UPFA members were members of the Party, how is it that the faction which is in the Opposition vote against the Budget, sitting in the Opposition?” Prof. Peiris queried angrily.
“People who have been elected on the ‘betel leaf’ are sitting in the Opposition and voting against the Budget and the Speaker’s argument rings hollow in this instance,” he said.
“If the Speaker’s argument is that it is the UPFA Secretary is the one who decides on these matters, he is an integral part of the Government which formulates the Budget and other Government policies, how is it that all the MPs of the UPFA who have been elected on the ‘betel leaf’ ticket are subject to the Whip and the Authority of the Secretary, how is it that these members are voting against the Budget and other Bills of the Government,” he pointed out.
