With the aim of increasing their demand for the post of Opposition Leader in Parliament, 68 Joint Opposition (JO) MPs have decided to act as an independent group in the Opposition in Parliament, Sri Lanka Freedom Party Ratnapura District Parliamentarian Ranjith Soyza said yesterday (13).
These 68 JO MPs are currently functioning as Members of the United People’s Freedom Alliance, within the legislature. They have planned to hand over letters individually to Speaker Karu Jayasuriya requesting that they be recognized as independent MPs attached to the JO when Parliament sessions resume next week.
Soyza added that upon the submission of the letters to the Speaker, the JO MPs will commence a move to obtain the post of the Opposition Leader.
He observed that the post has to be given to the JO legally and if the Government does not respond to it positively, they will initiate
outside Parliament against the Government.
