Deputy Minister Ranjan Ramanayake has asked United National Party (UNP) Leader Ranil Wickremesinghe to step down from the party leadership and allow young leaders to come to the fore.
Ramanayake, the Deputy Minister of Social Empowerment, Welfare, and Kandyan Heritage, expressed these views yesterday (23), at a media briefing held at the Madiwela MPs’ Housing Complexes.
“Each and every animate and inanimate thing in the world has an expiry date. World leaders resign when their time is up.
For example, leaders like Lee Kwan Yu and Fidel Castro stepped down. None of them stayed in power until their followers had to chase them away,” he added.
“I don’t want to protect any corrupt person who is connected with Bonds scam. I voted against the no-confidence motion, because the party decided to vote against it, even though my conscience was not in agreement. If I voted against it, I would have lost my Ministerial portfolio and would not have a stage like this to reveal corruption.”
