Onions purchased from farmers left to rot – 87,000 kgs discovered in Galenbindunuwewa

A stock of 87,000 kilogrammes of rotten big onions have been discovered from a government storage facility in Galenbindunuwewa. After the stock of big onions was identified as not suitable for consumption, it was moved out of the government storage facility.

According to our correspondent, locals in the area have attempted to carry away the rotten big onions. Meanwhile, the Food and drug Inspector of the Anuradhapura distrct stated that there is a risk of big onions not suitable for consumption entering the Anuradhapura markets.

He stated that information has come to light of an attempt to purchase these big onions for a lesser price and ‘invade the domestic markets.’

In raids conducted during the past few days a stock of rotten big onions weighing over 300 thousand have been seized from the sathosa storage facility. Ananda Weragoda stated that it has been revealed that stocks of big onions unfit for consumption has been purchased from farmers via sathosa during the past few days.
