UNESCO urged to make the ‘Thripitaka’, a world heritage

Sri Lanka is expected to make a proposal to the United National Educational Scientific and Cultural Organization to declare the Thripitaka as a world heritage on March 23.

The Cabinet on Wednesday approved a memorandum submitted by the President Maithripala Sirisena proposing to name ‘The Thripitaka’ as world heritage to the UNESCO,

With the intention of fulfilment of this, President Sirisena also proposed to conduct a programme themed “Thripitakabiwandana” from March 6 to 23 and the Cabinet approved the proposal.

President Maithripala Sirisena on Wednesday said the Indian Government has already announced that they will second the proposal at the UNESCO. “Many Buddhist countries have informed us that they will speak in support of this proposal, when it is discussed at the UNESCO.
